SUMMARY:July Gallery Night with Megan VanKanegan
DESCRIPTION:Manic Mondays by Lana del Cray:\nA collection of visual diary entries from the patron saint of overthinking\, emotional support beverages\, and turning minor inconveniences into major plot points. Through drawing\, painting\, and assemblage\, the work uses humor\, pop culture references\, and storytelling to explore vulnerability\, identity\, and the occasional feeling that Taylor Swift and James Bond are raging inside of you.\nOpening Reception: Friday July 3rd 5-7:30pm\nMy practice grows from a curiosity about what materials can hold. Through drawing\, painting\, and assemblage\, I often begin with what is found or left behind. I pull things apart\, reconfigure them\, and trace how materials carry memory through texture\, history\, and transformation. My work asks how materials remember and what they choose to forget. I am drawn to found and discarded materials as a way of exploring questions of worth\, belonging\, and renewal. The way a material pushes back often reveals something human\, mirroring the instability of memory and emotion. I treat making as both repair and inquiry\, an ongoing act of care that asks for patience\, attention\, and curiosity. Alter egos and self-portraiture frequently appear throughout my work. Through play\, imagination\, and storytelling\, these characters create space to explore vulnerability from different perspectives. They allow me to move between memory and invention\, using humor and reflection to navigate experiences that can be difficult to approach directly. Through layering\, cutting\, painting\, and reworking\, I look for moments where fragility and persistence meet. My studio practice is a space for slowing down\, listening\, and remaining present with what continues to change. Megan VanKanegan is an artist\, educator\, and designer based in Ithaca\, New York. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago and currently teaches studio art at Tompkins Cortland Community College. \nThis program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program from the New York State Council on the Arts\, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature\, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.

DESCRIPTION: \nEyeVee Arts and Cortright Electric are pleased to present Sound*Object\, a show that explores\, well\, sound and objects. Ok\, that’s maybe a little reductive – think of it more like this: this is a sound art show. However\, instead of being something along the lines of performance\, documentation and listening\, we’ll be exploring the concepts of sound with relation to sculpture\, object and interface – where the notions of composition\, instrument and artifact are recontextualized via some aspect of physical tangibility. For this iteration\, we feature four artists\, Lyn Goeringer (Baltimore\, Md)\, Brandon Auger (Halifax\, Nova Scotia)\, Paulina Velazquez Solis (San Jose\, Costa Rica/Ithaca) and Travis Johns (Ithaca) presenting works that incorporate resonance\, mechanics\, sensors\, soft sculpture\, found objects\, radio interference\, taxidermy and of course\, sound.\n\nPlease join us for an opening on Friday\, July 31 from 6-8 PM\, as well as gallery hours from 2-4 PM on Saturdays and Sundays (and by appointment) as well as for select special events over the course of the show.\n\n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Oh hey\, a show! Or\, more specifically\, a weird music show. And\, even\nmore specifically\, a weird music show that directly relates to the\nsound*object show in the gallery. Here’s what’s up: at 7 PM on\nSaturday\, August 1\, Eyevee Arts and Cortright Electric present: From Baltimore\, Lyn Goeringer is a composer\, sound artist\,\nimprovisor\, and performer who makes her own instruments and\nmulti-media pieces that focus on the unusual and everyday within\nsound\, video\, and electronics. Her work relies on intense focus and\nattention to bring the listener to a point of intentional hearing— a\nworld where unusual objects bring haunting soundscapes to life\, and\neveryday objects become sonic in ways we do not usually get the\nopportunity to hear. Informed by reductionism and essentialism in\nimprovisation and compositional practice\, her works investigate\nindividual sounds and images\, giving them the time and space they need\nfor their inner complexity to rise to the surface. Her current\nresearch/practitioner focus is on the mythopoetic as it relates to the\nunconscious and the unseen. \n …I believe for this performance\, an amplified goat skull may be\ninvolved in this performance\, but don’t take my word for it. \n Comfort Link is the solo tape music project of Tim Wisniewski\,\nproprietor and co-founder of the Spleencoffin label in Baltimore.\nUtilizing a battery of temperamental reel to reel tape machines and a\ndistinctly magnetic palette of crumbling hiss\, feedback\, and cozy\nsaturation\, Comfort Link pulls the fragmentary implements and audio\ndetritus of mid-century living room hi-fi culture through the dim\ntunnel of post-industrial audio slime. \nLiz Meredith is a violist\, improviser and composer from Baltimore\,\nMD. Her music explores intersections between acoustic chamber music\,\ninstrumental improvisation\, electro-acoustic composition\, and ambient\nmusic. Liz’s recordings include 3 solo albums\, The Disposition of\nVibrant Forms\, a 5 LP set in collaboration with John Somers\, and\nvarious solo and collaborative works on cassette. Her most recent solo\nalbums Repro – Ext (Hard Return) & Repro (s P L e e N C o F F i N)\nhave received critical acclaim from publications such as Tiny Mix\nTapes\, Vital Weekly\, ATTN Magazine\, and the Sound Projector.  In\naddition to performing her own music\, Liz has premiered new works by\nemerging composers\, and has also contributed her sound to recordings\nby a wide range of artists. \nHolding down the local front: \nCaleb Crittenden is an artist\, experimental musician\, and independent\nresearcher of sound from Syracuse\, New York. Through improvisation\,\nDIY electronics\, modular synthesis\, software development\, and\nelectroacoustic composition\, he creates work that explores attentive\nlistening\, emergence\, and the creative possibilities of unpredictable\nsound. \n And finally \nOtherwise known as Vaux Flores in certain circles\, Travis Johns’ last\nthree performances involved 1.) decimating an electric guitar with an\namplified excavator 2.) sawing a cello in half in a chapel and 3.)\ngiving himself severe frost burns with dry ice while using it to\nresonate an amplified meat cleaver in Bangkok. Given this track\nrecord\, we’re pretty sure he’ll probably just break out the old guitar\nfor some campfire singalongs or something. Keeping on theme\, he also\nused to live in Baltimore.

SUMMARY:August Gallery Night with Jim Lassoie
DESCRIPTION:Fractured Realities: Perspectives on Nurture\, Nature\, and the Human Condition\nAn Exhibition of Photographs by Jim Lassoie\n“It’s not that something different is seen—but that one sees differently.”– C. G. Jung \nAfter nearly seventy years of making photographs\, I turned more deliberately toward photographic art following my retirement from Cornell University in 2021. While my camera remains focused on the observable world\, my interests increasingly lie beyond simple description. The photographs in this exhibition explore what I call fractured realities—moments when ordinary subjects suggest meanings that extend beyond what is immediately visible. Landscapes\, weathered buildings\, birds in flight\, found objects\, and elements of nature become metaphors for memory\, aging\, loss\, resilience\, connection\, and renewal. These images are less concerned with documenting a scene than with inviting viewers to consider what else it might represent. This approach reflects the insight of photographer Minor White\, who wrote in 1946\, “One does not photograph something simply for what it is\, but for what else it is.” Some images in this exhibition may appear familiar; others may seem unsettling\, ambiguous\, or\, as several viewers have remarked\, “a little strange.” I welcome that response. The work seeks a balance between clarity and mystery\, observation and imagination\, encouraging viewers to pause\, reflect\, and discover their own meanings within the frame. Ultimately\, these photographs are reflections on nature\, nurture\, and the human condition—and on our shared journey through a world that is often more layered\, fragile\, and mysterious than it first appears. \nThe show will be available for viewing 8am-8pm in August. \nThis program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program from the New York State Council on the Arts\, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature\, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.
