SUMMARY:December 2024 Gallery Night w/ TC3 Art Department
DESCRIPTION:“Fragments of Identity” brings together the diverse artistic voices of TC3 faculty\, students\, and tutors. The exhibition explores the concept of identity through a variety of media—cross-contour drawings that capture the tactile essence of human form\, portraits that tell personal stories\, and fragmented digital works that reflect the layered nature of our digital age. This collection invites viewers to piece together the various fragments\, forming a collective mosaic of experiences\, perceptions\, and expressions. Curated by Megan VanKanegan and Tanya Komar. \nThis program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant\nprogram from the New York State Council on the Arts\, with the support of the office of the Governor\nand NYS Legislature\, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.

SUMMARY:November 2024 Gallery Night w/ Scott Ackerman
DESCRIPTION:Scott Michael Ackerman is a self-taught artist from upstate New York. Working at times within the traditions of Folk and Outsider art\, Ackerman frequently utilizes unorthodox materials and found objects in his practice. As a self-taught artist he considers his approach as primitive and unconventional\, rejecting the boundaries of traditional culture. He explains his process is driven by intuition and instinct\, using acrylic\, pencil and spray paint for their immediacy: “When I sit down to work\, I typically don’t know what I’m going to paint. I use mediums that dry quickly in order for me to get as much down on the surface while it’s still fresh in my head”. Titles are carefully chosen and he uses text within the works to point towards a “telling” of the story as he imaged it. The viewer is presented with a starting point for their own interpretation. The influence of Folk art can be seen in Ackerman’s expressive mark making\, the use of varied and bright colors\, repetitive patterns\, and symbolic imagery. His style can be decorative at times\, especially is his rendition of natural elements. \nScott Michael Ackerman lives in Margaretville\, NY with his wife\, daughter\, and son that also serves as his studio/gallery space.

SUMMARY:August 2024 Gallery Night w/ Michael Callahan
DESCRIPTION:“Wind\, Waves + Water”  Seneca Stone Art by Michael Callahan with a live acoustic performance. \nIn early childhood\, I spent hours collecting shells and stones on various beaches around the US with my parents and grand parents. Searching for the right stones is a type of meditation. I am inspired by the vertically stacked shale-stones formed by waves near the waters edge of Seneca Lake. I like to think that my best work is achieved when I get out of the way of myself and let the stones take me where they want to go\, as close to nature as possible. \nMichael Callahan holds a degree in Industrial Design from The University Of The Arts in Philadelphia. He has studied landscape painting\, glass blowing\, blacksmithing\, woodworking and pottery. He spent 20 years designing products mainly in the housewares industry working on brands such as Steuben\, OXO\, All Clad\, Umbra\, Pyrex\, Revere and Oneida. He has lived on Seneca Lake for 20 years with his wife Mary. \nMade possible in part with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts\, administered by the Community Arts Partnership.

SUMMARY:December Gallery Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this December’s First Friday Gallery Night in our guest gallery lounge! From 4-7pm on Friday\, December 2nd we will be showcasing photographer Keith Millman’s new collection\, Pictures from my Boat. \n  \nArtist Statement \n“Pictures From My Boat” are made from two feet above the water while I sit in my solo\ncanoe paddling around lakes in northern New York. In half-second exposures\, I\nphotograph while traveling across the water. I am afloat while at the lowest reaches of\nthe sky. I breathe from one element while the other holds me up. Right where the sky and\nwater meet\, I am a little into each.\nThough I sit at the in-between\, I can orient myself when I see the horizon – it is\ncomforting to know where there is land. By looking at the horizon I feel placed in my\nsmall boat. Waves\, wind\, and momentum move my vessel so it is rare the boat is actually\nstill. It is always in motion. Even if I am motionless\, the boat turns\, moves and pivots.\nFrom my vantage it is the landscape that is in flux\, changing\, and overlapping. The\nlandscape is in motion\, not me. \nKeith Millman\n11-2022 \n  \n  \nGrayhaven’s cash bar will be open for drinks and light snacks. \nKeith’s show will be up through December\, freely viewable Tuesdays – Sundays between 8am – 7pm. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:September Gallery Night @ Grayhaven Motel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next installment of Gallery Night at Grayhaven! Friday\, September 2nd from 4-7pm in our gallery guest lounge\, join us in welcoming Eva Capobianco‘s show\, Exploring the Trail… \nThe inspiration for this series began during the Finger Lakes Trail spring weekend of 2019. I spent three days with friends hiking the western end of the Trail in Allegheny State Park. After a very rainy spring\, we were trekking through a lot of mud and across streams of various sizes. At one point we crossed a wooden bridge spanning about 30 feet. The stream crossings can be anything from a couple of planks to substantial wood structures. Using my i-phone\, I snapped some photos of this bridge and continued hiking. As I walked\, I started imagining a wall sculpture in my mind. I would use a photo of this bridge alongside a couple of wood boards to represent a simple crossing. As I pictured the piece in my mind\, the idea grew into a whole series. I would find inspiration from the photos and make at least one piece for each of the 34 maps on the trail. The works are designed partly on paper and partly by arranging and re-arranging the found objects with the photos. Once a design is set\, the works are carefully and lovingly assembled\, sanded\, and polished to bring them to life. \nExploring the Trail will be up through June 2022\, viewable daily between 3-7pm.

SUMMARY:July 2022 Gallery Night @ Grayhaven
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Gallery Night @ Grayhaven! Friday\, July 1 from 4 – 7pm in our gallery guest lounge. This month we are overjoyed to feature Emily Sanders Hopkins’ new work\, Velvet and Other Real People… \n  \n“Velvet started out life as Donald Trump’s imaginary friend\, in a devolving whirlwind of vacation spots and late nights watching cable news\, but now she’s a real person experiencing things she never could have when she spent all of her time with Donny: rivers\, deep/long conversations\, small college towns\, minor cults\, and camping\, to name a few. Emily Sanders Hopkins’s ink drawings and acrylic ink paintings depict Velvet’s expanding understanding of Donny\, America\, and her own life\, which is harder and more interesting than anything she could ever have dreamed up on her own. Just how powerful are imagination and belief in making a life or a world\, and when does making the world right require us to ignore some realities\, or even make up new ones?” \n  \nEmily Sanders Hopkins is an essayist and artist whose cartoons have appeared in the New Yorker and other national magazines. She is a graduate of WVU and the Johns Hopkins University\, where she earned a masters degree in fiction writing. Enlisted in the U.S. Army in her youth\, she served as a 97E\, Interrogator and Russian linguist. She’s had two main careers\, one in marketing and fundraising\, the other in editing magazines and books. She was Senior Editor for Cornell University’s magazine Ezra for several years and a fundraiser for Cornell’s Prison Education Program. At Scholastic Inc. she served as Editor of Choices\, a magazine for teens. Most recently\, she is the Outreach and Development Manager for Hospicare & Palliative Care Services. She has also drawn over 60 family portraits commissioned by people all over the country (including nearly a dozen Ithaca families). She writes an illustrated advice column newsletter called Emily Writes Back\, which can be found at emilywritesback.com\, and she is at work on a novel about Velvet\, the woman at the center of Donald Trump’s secret life. She and her husband\, fellow cartoonist Marshall Hopkins\, live with their daughter in Ithaca. \n  \n“Velvet and…” will be up in our gallery through the end of August\, viewable daily between 3-7pm. \nLearn more about the artist and her work at http://www.esrhopkins.com/
