SUMMARY:August Gallery Night with Jim Lassoie
DESCRIPTION:Fractured Realities: Perspectives on Nurture\, Nature\, and the Human Condition\nAn Exhibition of Photographs by Jim Lassoie\n“It’s not that something different is seen—but that one sees differently.”– C. G. Jung \nAfter nearly seventy years of making photographs\, I turned more deliberately toward photographic art following my retirement from Cornell University in 2021. While my camera remains focused on the observable world\, my interests increasingly lie beyond simple description. The photographs in this exhibition explore what I call fractured realities—moments when ordinary subjects suggest meanings that extend beyond what is immediately visible. Landscapes\, weathered buildings\, birds in flight\, found objects\, and elements of nature become metaphors for memory\, aging\, loss\, resilience\, connection\, and renewal. These images are less concerned with documenting a scene than with inviting viewers to consider what else it might represent. This approach reflects the insight of photographer Minor White\, who wrote in 1946\, “One does not photograph something simply for what it is\, but for what else it is.” Some images in this exhibition may appear familiar; others may seem unsettling\, ambiguous\, or\, as several viewers have remarked\, “a little strange.” I welcome that response. The work seeks a balance between clarity and mystery\, observation and imagination\, encouraging viewers to pause\, reflect\, and discover their own meanings within the frame. Ultimately\, these photographs are reflections on nature\, nurture\, and the human condition—and on our shared journey through a world that is often more layered\, fragile\, and mysterious than it first appears. \nThe show will be available for viewing 8am-8pm in August. \nThis program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program from the New York State Council on the Arts\, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature\, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.

SUMMARY:October Gallery Night with Lisa Gillis
DESCRIPTION:October Gallery Night with Lisa Gillis\n\n\n\n\nThe Nature of Things\nFriday October 2nd\, 5pm-7:45pm\nIn The Nature of Things\, I explore and respond to the natural world around us here in the finger lakes. A collection of paintings in gouache reflecting the beauty of the big vistas and the small vignettes found in nature. \nI am an artist living in Elmira\, NY who works in several different mediums including gouache\, watercolor\, oils\, and polymer clay. I spend my time in my studio creating art\, helping as an administrator and founding member for Urban Sketchers Corning\, and teaching and mentoring local upcoming artists. You can find my work displayed in various public venues around the Elmira/Corning area and at Handwork in Ithaca. I have exhibited work in local museums and galleries including the Arnot Art Museum\, The Gmeiner Museum\, and Cloudcroft Studios. I have been honored to receive several awards in local shows. Nature is my constant source of inspiration. When I’m not painting you can often find me kayaking\, hiking\, and camping. I like to explore not only the big vistas\, but also the quiet\, unnoticed vignettes which nature provides. Creating art helps me to both connect to the natural world and make sense of its chaos. Painting allows me to bring a sense of order to the magic I see all around me. With a brush I can make marks that represent both the object and my experience of the object. I have always been an artist. It is my first language. \n  \nThe show will be available for viewing 8am-8pm throughout October.

SUMMARY:October :: The Spectral Express :: Ahmed Salvador :: IV_Gallery :: Cortright_electric :: 10.02.2026 6pm-9pm
DESCRIPTION:The Spectral Express \nAhmed Salvador \n  \no p e n i n g \nFriday October 2nd\, 6:00pm \n  \nMiniatures link people to points in time that are in stasis. Model train sets bring families together. Perspective is important: one looks down at the motion\, looping like a clock. The event repeats. The event is false. \nLightboxes containing film abstract the landscape. Color prints utilizing traditional darkroom processes showcase disappearing views of stations and houses. The 3-walled video animates these photographic stills and at times destroys the miniatures. These are reimaginings of memories\, linked by one line…\nThe Spectral Express. \nAhmed Salvador is a photographer with an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is an adjunct assistant professor at CUNY and a teaching artist at Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia.
